Thoughts of a Casting Instructor (part 1)

I have been part of the sea angler magazine casting scheme for over 20 years and have made loads of friends and contacts during that time . I have seen all types of casting styles and although not being a massive caster by modern day standards I like to think of myself as a fishing caster and even at my age could put a bait 150 yds in good conditions with a nice relaxed style if need be. I thought I would share an insight on how I like to run a session and perhaps highlight some common mistakes anglers make  with their casting.

Most anglers contact me through the website or by word of mouth and I like to talk to the angler before we meet and discuss what stage their casting is at and what equipment they  are using  and what  they want to achieve from the session. We then arrange to meet on my local beach so we can take a look at their style in a  real fishing situation as after all that is were he will be using his new found skills, hopefully!

First item on the beach when we meet is a health and safety briefing to make the angler aware of the dangers around him to himself and the public. Next we look at his equipment I suppose the split in reels is perhaps 60/40 in favour of fixed spool reels and to be fair its a lot easier to teach using a FS reel.

Another check I do is the placement of the reel on the rod as a lot of anglers have the reel placed to high on the butt which means they are over stretching. Also many anglers turn up with either their FS reels under-filled with heavy line or multipliers with too much line on them both cause problems.  Quite often we have to re spool or I do carry a few reels as spares.

Most rods these days are fit for purpose whether they cost £50 or £500 they can all put a bait far enough to catch fish.

So once I am happy with the set up then we start to look at the anglers style. I would ask him to show me how he casts Im not interested in how far it goes I want see how he gets there! so I can check his stance, head, position and arm position. Another thing I notice with a lot of anglers is their choice of sinker many use 6 and even 7oz of lead on a short drop and thrash over head. I believe this is because its the only way they think they can bend the rod and get some distance which in most cases is 60 to 80 yds.

However I also see a lot of more experenced anglers who have good styles but basic errors have crept in. Most relevant of these being the speed of the cast or trying to smash the rod or perhaps the most common not using their left (or bottom hand) in the cast. So with the beginner its a case of rebuilding a new style which makes the rod work and for the experienced angler a bit of tinkering with already good sound style.

In Part 2 I will explain how I would attempt to change a beginners overhead thrash into something more relaxed and help him gain more distance.

    Doubles Match One

The first match of this club comp kicked off on a nice but cool Monday evening where the 14 teams started their battles. Team Crack off this year was taking it a bit more seriously so much so we arrived at the booking in point EARLY from the Pub to make sure that we could walk off with the other teams to our “Hotspot”.

WE thought we had a bye in the first round which meant that all we had to do was to catch a sizable fish and get our three points for a win, this turned out not to be the case. The venue was end of prom to the head and the fishing had been very slow in that area however we knew a little hotspot.

The teams all walked or drove to their “Hotspots” with the younger anglers and those who knew what they were doing made for the wrasse beds under the head we of course were much nearer the car and hence less of a walk, we were not alone in doing this!!!!!! Thinking all we needed was a sizable fish we both used longer rods and fixed spools and 3 hook traces with size 4 hooks together with our latest purchase a new bait waiter so we could arrange our baits in a more professional way!!!!!!

The comp started at 7.30 so out went the hooks full of rag lug limpet only about 40 yds I had seen the england squad fish like this so if they are doing it this way it must be right. Low and behold a few mintues later I pull in a small flounder which is undersize that was all the action we had until it got dark and cold so much so I went back to the car for my coat. It was this time that Sally had her first bite which was a sizable pout, she is a great believer in catch and release so instead of putting the fish in her bucket ready for the weigh in she had it weighed by Andy who was fishing nearby and then returned the fish to whence it came. It was then she was told that in fact another team had joined the league and therefore no one had byes so we were against another team!!!! It took a bit of believing that while I had been away getting my coat and talking to some of the guys as you do she had caught a fish weighed it and put it back, I thought she was winding me up and had to check with Andy!

Sally then caught another undersized pout and in a desperate attempt to catch a larger fish I put out a turbot bait as a few had been taken in the area however that failed as well so the match ended at 11 it was a poor night allround not much taken in our section we perhaps had more than most. Didn’t stay for weigh in as was a bit p—-d off by the bye thing but anyway life is to short. However we did lose to the other team but still gained 2 points which was better than some had and perhaps this long rod revolution might improve out catch.

The next round is at Milford Shingle bank so lets hope for some better action there is a short video on www,castyourlead.com facebook page of the start of the match for those who want a laugh as my partner doesnt like her photo taken so when she finds this I will be in so much trouble!!!!!!!!!!!! Perhaps that will teach her to catch more fish than me (again)

A day with the England squad

When I was asked to meet up with the Angling Trust England junior squad to look at their casting in preparation for the home internationals in Wales nothing prepared me for the enthusiasm that these 11-16 year olds have for their sport.

We all met up on a cold and raw Southbourne beach with England Manager Dave Graham his assistant and sponsor George Cunningham  of Tronix Pro, Darren Phillips, chairman of selectors, and Mal Hulcolm England Youth Manager along with a few of the lads dads.

THis was the first time that the squad had met but they all seemed to get on well and after Dave had given his introductions and welcomes the beach had been pegged the battle started

The plan was for me to walk down the line of anglers offering any  advice I could to help them gain a few yards as we all knew that given the conditions fishing would be hard but the lads were keen to start

This was my first eye opening moment the amount of gear these lads had!! All rods were of the continental style 15 /16 ft rods all with fixed spool reels not a 7 ht in sight!!, loaded with 0.21 line 30lb leaders bait waiters where the norm as was spare rod rests for all their  rods! . The rigs were standard 3 hook flappers but with fluo carbon rig bodies and snoods with 3ozs pyramid lead

Watching from a distance I noticed that all the lads cast the same way, that was to stand front on to the sea arms above head and then a wild thrash! rather like you would use a spod rod on a lake.

To be fair a few where getting a good distance but sometimes the direction was missing. I felt that they were not making the rod work so I suggested to Jay that we tinker with his style. So we put the lead under the rod arms out look up and PULL punch but as with them all he was still thrashing at the rod (as many older anglers do!!) so once he understood that with this style the rod is bending from the start, he only needs half the effort to reach a good distance and it was going straight he really improved in fact he was the caster of the day.

The rest of the squad took their turn at this Brighton Cast and I think they all benefited from this relaxed way of casting, and the management team were happy with their progress. Hopefully they will continue to use this cast and keep up the practice until it becomes second nature to them.

THe fishing however was dire a few rockling and pin whiting were caught.  Dan Stote the most experienced member of the team had a nice bass in close, the lads gave it their all most were blue with cold a few had wet feet, but the continued with smiles on their faces.

George from Tronix Pro brought some of his new rods to play with so it would have been rude not to! So I crept off to play , what fun they were to use 16ft  fspool reel 0.21 line 3 0zs lead and 30lb leader , lead on ground turn and hit wow it really flew and for me straight!! these would make a great outfit for Plaice at Chesil on a nice day also for garfish on light and pop ups which I suppose is what the match people use these days as distance is unlimited and bite detection first class.

So thanks Dave for the invite I hope the guys do England proud in Wales, I learnt as much as the lads did and will modify my own rigs for the up coming Doubles league and pleasure fishing, anybody want to buy some second hand zzipies !!!!!!!!!!!!(joking)

    Lack of Mud !

After reading several reports of plaice being caught at chesil I thought I would venture down to see if I could find any. There is a school of thought which says that if you can find the clay/ mud then that is where the plaice and other flat fish lay.

So having spent a few years fishing the shingle bank I know a few places where I can find these patches of ground. The weather was cold and the water was a milky colour and a few other anglers where already spread out looking for a plaice( see video on castyourlead Facebook page).

Armed with bait from Tom at abbotsbury tackle and carrying to much gear as normal I made my way to my chosen mark which lucky for me was empty and tackled up with a loop rig and a sliding wishbone on the two rods also had a dvice with a double runner rig and a sliding Pennel rig as back ups.

First warm up cast and for some reason the line on the 7ht backlashed and I said goodbye to the leader and lead that was a good start, so on with the spare rocket and out with the bait.

Normally you can tell when you are on the clay/mud as on retrieve you have to pull the lead out but this didn’t happen so I recast changing my range in an attempt to find this clay but couldn’t was I not casting far enough or too far or have recent storms covered it up?

So all I had to show for my efforts was one small plaice on the loop rig which was returned to grow bigger a few plaice where caught by othe anglers but not in great numbers perhaps it is a bit early and needs to warm up a bit. Still there is always next time!!

    Rude Awakening

It has been many years since I fished a club match in earnest but I promised myself that this year I would give it ago and see what I could learn!

The club had a match on Saturday at Steamer Point which is an easy ish venue to fish. As is the time of year it was always going to be a rockling and whiting feast.

So in anticipation I had made up,some rigs with size 4 hooks and 10 lb fluocarbon snoods on a light braid outfit on a fixed spool.

However what I didnt realise was that you can’t theses days just turn up and fish you have to book in and pay a fee and then walk off together to the beach, I was late so missed the booking in and also, had no money on me so couldnt pay the fee!!!

So the only thing left to do was to freelance with the guys, lucky for me I fished next to Pete who showed me what the 2013 match angler now uses. Nowadays the match angler is looking to catch anything SIZABLE with fins and to,do,this he has scale down his gear to river sizes

Pete fished with a 16′ftnrod and fixed spool reel loaded with 12lh line and very small hooks on fluocarbon line with a 3 ozs lead his rigs had pop ups on some and luminous beads on others that he shone a ultra violet light on to make the glow which the fish like .

Looking around me most other anglers where using the same type of outfit, and true to form they were catching small rocking and flounders from close in range. Some of the rigs were 3 to 4 ft long withn3 hooks which gives better bait presentation with or without beads or pop ups.

The match had a good turn out and when I left before the end Pete despite me asking him All these questions had 4 rockling and it looked like most anglers had a few of these fish, I had a rockling and a flounder on a loop rig and 3 hook cascade rig.

I have to admit I felt a little bit out of my depth with all this new long and lite rigs and tactics but thanks to Pete I also learned a lot and hopefully I can use this new found knowledge in this years Doubles league or the next shore points match

    Double Dykes and Hengistbury Head

Most of the information for Southbourne would also apply to Double Dykes and Hengistbury head but with a few important differences!

In recent years parking has been stopped in the evenings so that you have to leave the venue before they lock the access gate at 10pm otherwise you can’t move your car, there is a large car park which is expensive during the holiday season.

The water at Double Dykes is deeper than along Southbourne and due to the parking issue is not fished as much again in years gone by this section up to the head was a great match venue.

The choice marks are under the coastguard hut on the head where I have head some nice codling and bass and the famous “wrasse beds” mark many a match or open compertion has been won from here. Due to the changes made in the beach and the effect of longshore drift I am not sure if this mark has been buried under a mountain of sand , it used to consist of aa patch of rocks about 100 mtrs from the long stone groyne where the wrasse lived within casting range.

The flat stone groyne is a haven for the float and spinning angler as garfish mackerill pollack and some large bass as well as other rock fish, many anglers ride bikes down to the mark from Hengistbury head car park at dawn it’s about a mile pedal!!

Next we come to the Beach Hut section which on its day can fish well ,it is a long track down there but a noddy train is available to take you down there. In early season Plaice can show here it is don’t a deep water Venue in fact it’s shallow sandy bottom with small rock patches there is also a small reef that runs out from the shore under the cliffs. These patches hold food for fish and cod to 30lb have been caught here as well as large Bass in close, although crabs can be a problem in spring and summer

Southbourne (end of prom to the kink)

As with most of the marks along the Bournemouth sea front which would include end of prom the bistro and the kink, there is probably no real hotspot although most anglers have their favourite mark which in many cases is within easy walking distance of parking,

The beach is made up of mainly sand and loose peebles and has short groynes to protect the beach .In my younger days we fished from the prom itself as the water would lap the base of the wall and many a good fish were caught in the back wash from the prom!!!

Nowadays things are different the beach has been built up by the local council and this has changed the fishing somewhat. Now we have two gullies with a sandbar in between them, the first gully stretches the whole length of the beach and is about 10 mtrs out from the end of the groynes the second is about a further 100 mtrs and the fish tend to swim up and down these features. The depth of water is not great perhaps 10 mtrs at 120 mtrs but deeper in the gullies.

If you visit the venue at a low tide spring with some wave action you can see these features for yourself as well on a nice calm day with the sunshine at high tide you can pick out the dark deeper water of both of the gullies

During the early part of the year the fishing is slow with rockling and pout however as always a decent fish can turn up as witnessed by a 5lb sole taken on sandeel in january. As the weather improves so does the fishing with the arrival of the plaice and a few flounders mainly taken in daylight . the UK shore plaice record of 8lb was taken in this area!!!!

As we get into summer the beach is impossible to fish in daylight hours as its full of the holiday makers unless you make an early start, for the mackerel and rays as well as spinning from the groynes.

However this area comes into its own from dusk onwards once the sun is off the water then you will have a good chance of catching sole flounders dabs smoothhound bass(close in in rough weather) dogfish with the match angler taking garfish mackerel and scad using light and long rigs with floats or pop up rigs. The area used to be prolific for rays and I have had some nice small eyed up to 10lb and although a few are still caught each year with small thornbacks and undulates they don’t seem to be as many as there used to be..a few cod do turn up but are caught by accident you would not class this area as a cod hotspot.

Tackle required is a normal beach caster 12 to 14ft long with a multiplier or fixed spool with 12 to 15 lb line balanced to 4 ozs and 50 lb shockleader with rigs and hooks to match your target .

Distance casting doesn’t seem to hold any advantage in fact more fish are caught within 60 to 80mts than at long range . I prefer to fish two rods one in each gully and most of the time the close rod out fishes the long range one. I like to fish and hour either side of high tide on a medium spring tide however other anglers may have other ideas on tides!

Baits to use are worm for most fish, crab for the smoothhound, bluey and sandeel for the rays and the occasional turbot and sometimes after a storm slipper limpet that has been washed up can be deadly fished close in for bass.

To sum up Southbourne will never set the world alight with large bags of fish but it is an easy beach to fish with a little tide flow and normally weed is not a problem. Parking is free out of season and the beach is busy at weekends.

    Last session of the year

As Christmas is approaching and my mate Barry had at last found himself a Zziplex HSM on EBay it seemed rude not to escape for a few hours to play with his new toy. To make it easy Southbourne was the venue and a nice coloured sea greeted as as we set up our HSMs so we could compare them. Really the only difference was in the rings as mine had the lighter rings but the difference was hardly noticeable.

I had also re oiled all my reels first time ever in some cases!!! And I was interested in how they ran!

Barry had a couple of OTG casts and liked the feel and the distance he was getting with his gear, so I think he will be using the HSM on more trips. The fishing was secondary really I was using a loop rig with rag and Barry was using lug and squid at all ranges strangely the only fish we had was a SIZABLE flounder its been years since I had one of those from that area.

Still it was a good few hours and we both enjoyed the outing and the rod was a great success however it still has to lose its virginity hopefully that will happen

    Swan Song at Sandbanks

The last match of the 2012 double league was held at Sandbanks with teams having a choice of fishing the harbour or the sea side. We as normal had to go to the pub to decide where to fish!

There was a nasty north wind blowing we arrived EARLY at the car park ready for the walk off, it looked like an even split with some anglers going after early flounders in the harbour.

As the sea side was sheltered and the sea calm we opted for this option we were fishing against doug and andy who split their options with andy fishing the harbour.

As luck would have it we were fishing next to doug so we could keep an eye on each other, we were using rag limpet and razor topped up with rag on loop rigs and flappers. The evening was slow doug had a pout early on so we knew a few fish were about, however we couldn’t find them try as we may all ranges everybody was struggling for fish.

So with last cast approaching I loaded up the loop rig and smacked it as far as I could and then walked off down the beach to talk to doug( those tactics have served me well over the years!!!)

After we had had a good moan about the state of fishing at the venue as I was walking back to wind in I heard a shout from Sally telling me I had a bite, so with 5 minutes left I let the fish play with the bait, knowing the doug had only a small pout in his bucket could this be a winning fish!!!!

Time to wind in! Fish on giving the HSM a nice pull as the wind was behind me the bait was a long way out so I have a carefull wind in fish still on, through the little bit of surf, the weed had caught in the leader knot in the top ring so had to walk backwards up the beach pulling the fish up the bank, I could see the bar of silver flapping on the beach , was this going to be SIZABLE and gain us 3 points the answer was no so back she went to grow bigger.

Back at the weigh it was obvious that it was a hard night to fish, a few flounders were caught in the harbour always a good sign for next month, doug beat us with his pout,so all in all hard work.

To sum up the series we improved our position in the league from previous years to about mid table and we learnt a bit more about smaller hooks and pop ups!!! Hopefully next year we can improve a bit more

    Cold evening at Southbourne

Neither of us had been out for a while so Barry and I agreed to meet for a few hours at Southbourne to catch some whiting and if you believe the grapevine some codling!!!

Barry had bought himself a 16ft Fishtec fixed spool rod that he was dying to try out and I have been working on a bit more left hand pull in my cast as I notice my left hand was getting lazy and not doing much in the cast.

We had an array of bait I was using squid in a dvice and a sandeel on an up and over rig which was blasted . Barry was using some lug and squid on his two rods , to cut a long story short the fishing was very slow Barry had a flounder in close and a whiting and a pout I had a couple of nice Sized whiting as the night went on it became very cold which we stood until about 10pm and then headed for the warm of home
